Dehnasar Lake is one of the highest and most pristine high-altitude freshwater lakes in the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas. Located in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh (Bordering Mandi and Kullu), it is nestled at an impressive altitude of 4,280 meters (14,040 feet) above sea level.
Tour Itinerary
- Day 1: Reach Polling Village & Hike to Marhad Camp
Distance / Time: ~5 km | 2 to 3 hours
Altitude: ~2,400 meters
Details: Arrive early at Joginder Nagar or the beautiful Barot Valley. Take a local taxi or bus past Lohardi to Polling Village, which is the last road head connected by vehicles. Start your gradual ascent walking alongside the river. Pitch your tents at the tranquil riverside clearing of Marhad (or Lamadugh Nalla). This short day helps your body adapt to the initial elevation
- Day 2: Marhad Camp to Lahesh Cave (Base Camp)
Distance / Time: ~6 km | 3 to 4 hours
Altitude: ~3,500 meters
Details: Break camp early and begin a steady uphill climb through dense pine forests and meadows of the Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary. Keep an eye out for high-altitude birds like the Himalayan Monal. As the tree line fades into rocky terrains, you will reach the shepherd meadows of Marhi or the Lahesh Cave Base Camp. Set up your campsite early, stay hydrated, and protect yourself against cold winds
- Day 3: Base Camp to Dehnasar Lake & Return to Marhad
Distance / Time: ~12 km | 7 to 8 hours
Altitude: 4,280 meters (Lake)
Details: This is the most demanding day of the trek. Start hiking by 5:00 AM with a packed lunch and at least 2 liters of water per person. The trail turns steep and rocky as you scale the ridges. Upon crossing the pass, the magnificent, crystal-clear Dehnasar Lake reveals itself nestled between high mountain peaks. Spend an hour soaking in the immense silence of this sacred lake. Begin your steep descent by early afternoon, trekking past the base camp all the way down to Marhad Camp to sleep at a warmer, safer altitude.
- Day 4: Marhad Camp to Polling Village & Departure
Distance / Time: ~5 km | 2 hours
Details: Wake up for a relaxed breakfast deep in the valley. Pack your gear, ensuring you leave no trash behind on this pristine trail. Complete the short, easy descent back down to Polling Village. Board your vehicle back to Barot or Joginder Nagar to catch your evening bus or train onward, marking the end of your wilderness expedition.
